How to Repair Laminate Flooring?
 

Problems with laminate flooring arises mainly because of dust, debris, heels of foot wear, moving of heavy furniture and so on. Following are the methods of laminate flooring repair for some common forms of damage.

Minor Scratch Repair
The simplest way to fix this problem is by using a special kind of wax crayons. They are available in a number of variety of shades and can be purchased from flooring and hardware stores. Select the shade of crayon carefully as it should blend well with the color of the flooring. Clean up all the dust and debris from the damaged area of the laminate flooring. Then keep applying the crayon on it till the time you find that the abrasion have disappeared completely. Finally, take a clean piece of dry cloth and rub it over the surrounding area to clean up any residues of crayon. Laminate floor repair kit often consist of a solution which when applied can hide the scratches.

Crack Repair
This problem can be corrected with the help of repair putty. To begin with, sand the cracked part of the floor with a sandpaper so that any loosely attached debris of the flooring material can be removed. Then clean up all the sanded dust with a damp piece of cloth and dry the area with another cloth. Any dust left behind can adversely affect the bonding between the putty and the laminate sheet. Take a generous amount of putty using a putty knife and apply it over the crack so that it get filled up properly. Wipe off any extra putty with a damp cloth first and then rub off the moisture with a dry cloth. Allow the putty to harden for the nest 24 hours. Make sure no one walks on to that area during that time.

Severe Damage Repair
When the damage sustained is beyond repair then you have to replace the plank with a new one. This is an advantage of laminate flooring that even if a severe damage has occurred on the floor, you do not have to lay a new flooring but just replacing the affected floor board will be sufficient. You have to start working from the wall which is nearest to the damaged floor board. Take out the baseboard from the wall area using a screw driver. This should be done very carefully as you have to reuse it after the repair work. Remove all the planks one by one that leads to the damage one. As you reach the damaged plank, remove it and put the new plank in place. Then put the remaining planks and the baseboard to their respective position.

Peaking Repair
Basically, the problem of peaking arises as a result of absence of sufficient amount of expansion space for the floor boards. The best way to get rid of this problem is to create enough space for panels to expand and thus reduce the tension in between them. It can be done by removal of the spacers that are present in between the wall and the floor boards. In case you have not used any spacer during laminate flooring installation, you have to take out the last floor board near the wall and reduce its width by half and inch and put it back to its place. You can avoid any kind of laminate flooring repair work with good care and maintenance of the floor. Try to keep the floor free from loose dirt and debris by regular cleaning. Use a furniture protector for heavy pieces of home furniture. While moving any of the furniture inside the room, lift them up instead of dragging them.
